The stage is dark, and the audience waits in anticipation for your act to begin. Suddenly, the curtains open and the spotlight switches on. There you are, in front of everyone\u2014in your underwear!<\/p>

Have you ever felt that way? There\u2019s actually a name for it: the \u201cspotlight effect.\u201d It\u2019s where you think people are always looking at you. Worse still, you\u2019re convinced those same people are making judgments about you. So you start worrying about what you wear, how you walk, and what you say. At other times, you just try to blend in with everyone else. That way, the spotlight won\u2019t be on you!<\/em><\/p>

Reality check: everyone is too worried about themselves to pay any attention to you. That sounds harsh, but it\u2019s true. Oh, there will always be some kid or group who tries to make themselves feel better by making fun of how someone else looks or does. Here\u2019s another reality check: those kids have more problems than you do.<\/p>

So, chances are, unless you\u2019re walking around with drinking straws hanging out your nostrils and a bat dangling from your left earlobe, you\u2019re not in anyone\u2019s<\/em> spotlight. If they say something rude about you, just smile and say, \u201cHey, thanks for noticing.\u201d<\/p>

Are there things you can do to really make sure? Of course. You can be kind, do your homework, make friends with kids who share your view of life, wear nice but not outlandish clothes, and more. You might end up in the \u201cspotlight,\u201d but it will be for all the right reasons!<\/p>

  • DO remember that, more than likely, the idea that you\u2019re always in the \u201cspotlight\u201d is all in your head.<\/li>
  • DO talk with a trusted adult about getting some counseling about your sense that people are always looking at you. It can make a big difference.<\/li>
  • DO reward yourself for accomplishments such as good grades or a musical performance. It will help build your sense of self-worth and you won\u2019t worry quite as much about what others think of you.<\/li>
  • DO consider whether you are doing something quirky that causes people to stare at you. Is it something you can change? If not, accept that you\u2019re who you are, and that\u2019s just fine. Make friends with others whom you know or think may be going through a similar experience of always feeling like they\u2019re in the spotlight.

  • DON\u2019T automatically think someone is looking at you and judging you. They\u2019re probably thinking about someone or something else. (It\u2019s even possible they<\/em> think you\u2019re<\/em> judging them!)<\/li>
  • DON\u2019T waste your energy worrying about what others think of you.<\/li>
  • DON\u2019T let one negative comment make you think everyone else feels the same way.<\/li>
  • DON\u2019T try and become someone you\u2019re not just to stay out of the spotlight (that isn\u2019t really there anyway).<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    Why did the chicken cross the road? He was fetching the soccer ball the\u00a0donkey had kicked over the goal.*<\/P>\n\n

    Now, a couple of you thought this joke was hilarious, while many more of you found it mildly amusing. Perhaps the majority of readers are simply asking, \u201cHow does this fellow manage to keep his job?\u201d Whichever the case, you were supposed to laugh, even if you didn\u2019t.<\/P>\n\n

    What I find disturbing is people laughing at me when they aren\u2019t supposed to. When I was about your age, I was pretty sure people were constantly laughing at me. This results from being \u201coverly self-conscious.\u201d Thankfully, most humans totally overcome this problem by age 75.<\/P>\n\n

    It turns out that vast throngs of junior high school students are overly self-conscious. (Don\u2019t confuse being self-conscious with the ability to stay awake during, say, Mr. Tooboring\u2019s science class. Keeping yourself conscious during these kinds of situations is a different matter entirely.) The following example will help illustrate a junior high school student\u2019s tendency to think that everybody else is always looking at them, laughing at them, or talking about them.<\/P>\n\n

    Let\u2019s say you\u2019ve gone to the Gaptooth at the local mall and purchased a funky new blouse. Assuming you\u2019re a girl, you probably look great in it. But the next morning when you walk into school, you think, I can\u2019t take my jacket off! If I do, everyone will look at my new blouse! <\/em>You begin perspiring. Maybe someone will think it looks stupid . . . and they\u2019ll laugh at me!<\/em>\u00a0<\/P>\n\n

    Now, do you really think that because of your choice of clothing someone is suddenly going to mistake you for roadkill? Is anybody actually going to burst out laughing? That\u2019s likely to happen only if the blouse features an inquisitive child named Dora on it with the accompanying words \u201dthe\u201d and \u201cExplorer.\u201d Otherwise, you\u2019re probably fine. Worst-case scenario: the class bully, Olga Gutpuncher, laughs at you. So who\u2019s got the real problem\u2014you or Olga? Hint: it\u2019s not you.<\/P>\n\n

    Still, overcoming self-consciousness can take some time. Once I was jog- ging down a sidewalk near Seattle, Washington. At that moment my eyes were fixed on a group of teens on the far side of an Albertsons supermarket parking lot.<\/P>\n

    \u00a0<\/P>\n

    Those teens look like they\u2019re up to no good,<\/em> I thought. It would have been better if I\u2019d been watching where I was going. That way I would\u2019ve stayed on the running path instead of nearly cutting myself in half as I ran into a wire stretched tightly from a parking lot lightpost to a nearby stake in the ground. Imagine a giant piece of elbow macaroni, and you will have a good idea of the configuration of my body during this time.\u00a0<\/P>\n\n

    Bouncing back to my original fully upright position, I glanced back at the teens. They were laughing at me!\u00a0<\/P>\n\n

    Or were they? Come to think of it, they were way over on the other side of the parking lot. Could it be they were actually laughing at the \u201cWhy did the chicken cross the road?\u201d joke one of them had just told, and not even paying attention to some random guy jogging by?<\/P>\n\n

    The truth is, God is pretty much the only one watching us all the time. Sometimes He probably has a good laugh over our actions. Other times all He can do is cry.<\/P>\n\n

    Bottom line: next time you\u2019re feeling way too self-conscious, just remember that nobody really cares about you. Wait a minute\u2014that didn\u2019t come out the way I meant it . . .<\/P>\n\n
