TIPS Help You Conquer Fear:<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

  • Realize that what you fear will probably never happen. That\u2019s just the reality of it.<\/li>
  • Face the fear rather than avoiding it forever. You\u2019ll feel better about yourself as you meet the challenge of overcoming a fear.<\/li>
  • Tackle your fear in small chunks. If you are afraid of the dark, turn off your light for a few more minutes each night. Eventually you\u2019ll get tired of dealing with it and the fear will fade away.<\/li>
  • Regularly imagine yourself doing the thing you fear (assuming it is legal!). Your mind is a powerful tool in helping you to face your fear in real time and space.<\/li>
  • Do what you can to reduce your risk of something bad happening. For example, if you\u2019re afraid of speaking in front of a group, spend extra time memorizing what you\u2019re going to say. Afraid of going in the water? Take swimming lessons, where you\u2019ll learn at an appropriate pace in a safe place.\u00a0 Text anxiety? Um, you might want to spend a little extra time studying. Preparation reduces fear and stress enormously.<\/li>
  • Ask someone else if they were ever afraid of something, and how they overcame their fear.<\/li>
  • Ask for professional help when you need it. There are tons of trained people out there who would love to help you say goodbye to your fear. Ask a trusted adult for a recommendation.<\/li>
  • Call on divine help. The Bible says to \u201cFear not!\u201d about 75 times. Write out this Bible verse and look at it regularly: \u201cBe strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go\u201d (Joshua 1:9).<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

    It all started when Aunt Jess invited me to visit her. No big deal, except that Aunt Jess lives on an island. Hawaii, to be exact.<\/p>

    Did I mention that Aunt Jess loves adventure?<\/p>

    Sailing, surfing, bungee jumping. Nothing scares her.<\/p>

    So how could I tell her the ocean makes the skin on the back of my neck crawl?<\/p>

    All that deep, dark water with who-knows-what lurking below. If she found out, she\u2019d think I was a wimp.<\/p>

    The first day of my visit wasn\u2019t too bad. Aunt Jess and I hiked through a rain forest to see a waterfall. We got rained on the entire time. Pretty awesome, actually.<\/p>

    The real problem didn\u2019t surface till the next day.<\/p>

    \u201cGuess what I have planned for us, Mike,\u201d Aunt Jess said. \u201cWe\u2019re going snorkeling!\u201d<\/p>

    I almost choked on my scrambled eggs. \u201cYou mean in the ocean?\u201d I asked. I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve been snorkeling before, but let me tell you, it\u2019s really hard to do without water.<\/p>

    Aunt Jess laughed. \u201cOf course,\u201d she said, messing up my hair. \u201cHurry and put on your swimsuit. We don\u2019t want to miss the boat.\u201d<\/p>

    Missing the boat sounded like a good idea to me. But I couldn\u2019t admit that to Aunt Jess. So I put on my swimsuit. The next thing I knew, we were getting on a boat.<\/p>

    \u201cAloha,\u201d said the captain. \u201cWelcome aboard.\u201d<\/p>

    I hung on to the r ailing. Tightly. God, I whispered to myself, please take care of us out here on the ocean. I wished boats made me seasick. Then I\u2019d have a reason to go back to land.<\/p>

    The breeze smelled like flowers.<\/p>

    The boat rolled over the waves like a mother rocking her baby.<\/p>

    \u201cDon\u2019t you love the ocean?\u201d<\/p>

    Aunt Jess whispered. The sun made her cheeks glow. For a moment, I wished I could love the ocean like she did.<\/p>

    Then I noticed the sharks. Seven or eight of them, at least. They were chasing our boat.<\/p>

    \u201cLook, Aunt Jess, sharks!\u201d I yelped. No wonder I didn\u2019t like the ocean.<\/p>

    One of the sharks jumped out of the water. It was the fattest shark I\u2019d ever seen. I figured we were about to become its lunch.<\/p>

    \u201cThey\u2019re dolphins, Mike,\u201d Aunt Jess corrected. \u201cAren\u2019t they incredible?\u201d<\/p>

    \u201cDolphins?\u201d I asked, looking at the fins on their backs. Another one jumped out of the water. I think it was smiling at me.<\/p>

    Just as I was starting to relax, the boat eased to a stop. I flinched at the sound of a sudden splash.<\/p>

    \u201cThe captain dropped the anchor,\u201d Aunt Jess explained. \u201cBelow us is a coral reef.\u201d She opened her giant purse. Out came four flippers, two masks, and two snorkels.<\/p>

    I was starting to understand. And it was not good. \u201cYou mean we\u2019re going to snorkel here? In the middle of the ocean? Don\u2019t we need a beach or something?\u201d<\/p>

    Aunt Jess shook her head. \u201cThis coral reef is a secret gift from God. He created it as another way to show us how much He cares for us, Mike.\u201d She handed me my gear and smiled. \u201cYou\u2019re going to love it.\u201d<\/p>

    I was pretty sure I was not going to love it. But I put on my flippers and mask. Then I shoved the snorkel into my mouth and jumped overboard.<\/p>

    At first all I could see were bubbles. Then I saw Aunt Jess. Her neon orange swimsuit was easy to spot.<\/p>

    We swam along the surface of the water. It looked like a rainbow had exploded on the ocean floor.<\/p>

    Bunches of coral grew everywhere.<\/p>

    Some were spiny, and others looked like huge cauliflowers. Fish swam near the reef\u2014schools of them, color-coded to match the coral. And for a while I forgot I didn\u2019t like the ocean.<\/p>

    Then I came nose to nose with a monster sea turtle. Its legs moved in slow motion. It\u2019s checking me out, I thought. This is my chance to show Aunt Jess that I am not a complete wimp. I\u2019ll hold still and let the turtle brush past me. I bet Aunt Jess will give me a thumbs-up since I\u2019m being so brave!<\/p>

    Wow, was I wrong! She started splashing and kicking like crazy. I put my head above water and spit out my snorkel. \u201cAunt Jess!\u201d I yelled as she swam away. But she couldn\u2019t hear me. She was busy climbing back onto the boat by the time I caught up with her.<\/p>

    \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d I asked, trying to catch my breath.<\/p>

    \u201cNothing, really,\u201d she said, taking off her flippers and mask. \u201cI guess that sea turtle took me by surprise.\u201d<\/p>

    \u201cWasn\u2019t it cool?\u201d I reached for a beach towel. \u201cIt was like an under \u2013 water dinosaur!\u201d<\/p>

    \u201cI was hoping it wouldn\u2019t get so close to us,\u201d she said, looking away.<\/p>

    And then it hit me. \u201cAunt Jess, are you afraid of sea turtles?\u201d I asked.<\/p>

    She nodded. \u201cI know it\u2019s silly. They just sort of give me the creeps.\u201d<\/p>

    I couldn\u2019t believe it. My adventure-loving aunt was afraid of something too! Maybe I wasn\u2019t such a wimp after all.<\/p>

    \u201cDid you know sea turtles are an endangered species?\u201d Aunt Jess asked.<\/p>

    I shrugged. \u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>

    \u201cLots of sea turtles have died from getting trapped in fishing nets. Or from eating trash like plastic bags.<\/p>

    Or from being hunted by people,\u201d Aunt Jess explained. \u201cNow there are laws to help protect the sea turtles that are left.\u201d<\/p>

    I hoped the friendly turtle I had met would stay safe.<\/p>

    \u201cIf we see them in the water or on the beach, we\u2019re never allowed to touch or tease them,\u201d Aunt Jess said. She shoved her gear back into her big purse. I guessed she was done snorkeling.<\/p>

    \u201cSo sea turtles aren\u2019t as tough as they look?\u201d I asked.<\/p>

    Aunt Jess smiled. \u201cI suppose not.<\/p>

    But they still scare me. Hey, the captain is going to take us back to shore soon. Would you be disappointed if we spent the rest of the day playing volleyball on the beach?\u201d<\/p>

    \u201cVolleyball sounds fine,\u201d I said, although part of me did feel disappointed. Playing volleyball on the beach didn\u2019t sound nearly as exciting as swimming with sea turtles.<\/p>

    Thanks for a wonderful adventure, God, I thought as I stowed my gear.<\/p>
